Why it was recalled
An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
What was recalled
Takata Corporation (Takata) is recalling certain seat-mounted, SSI-20 design type, Side Air Bag Inflators manufactured December 13, 2014, to December 14, 2014. A suspected manufacturing error during production of certain inflator lots may result in unusually high pressures in the inflators upon deployment of the side air bags. This over pressure could cause the inflator to rupture, causing metal fragments to be propelled into the passenger compartment.
What to do
Takata is working with the vehicle manufacturers that used these inflators in their vehicles. Those manufacturers are contacting their vehicle owners and their dealers will replace the seat-mounted side air bag inflators, free of charge. General Motors vehicles are covered by recall 15V-666 and Volkswagen vehicles are covered by recall 16V-045.. Follow the official notice for full instructions.
